Day by day in every way, I am getting better and better. This is the signature phrase of Emile Coue. Used by life coaches, hypnotherapists, psychologists and others, it is rarely attributed to the man who coined it. This is one of the first uses of affirmation in modern day psychology. The fact, that most who use this amazing phrase without knowing Coue unlikely phased him. His life was dedicated to service. Unlike may others, Coue did not seek fame. Often he treated people for free and freely gave of his insights.
Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie is his full name. He was born in 1857 France. Coue was both a pharmacist and a psychologist. He believed that imagination was all powerful. Imagination rather than will power was what created lasting change in people.
He and his wife opened The Lorraine Society of Applied Psychology in Nancy, France. Running free groups and individual sessions out of their home. He denied healing people, instead he ascertained that all he did was show them how to heal themselves.
He conceived of this while working as a pharmacist. Coue discovered that patients got better faster when he told them how wonderful the medicine was that he was dispensing. Since the product didn’t change the only explanation for this was his suggestion.
From this observation, Coue developed an interest in hypnosis and psychology. He spent the rest of his life developing methodology that others could benefit from.
Through the years this approach of using self suggestion, mantras or affirmations to effect personal change has been used by many well known self help gurus. And through, not in the same category of fame it is a technique that I use often with my clients.
